The Harvard Mark 1 was designed by a graduate student named Howard H. Alken in 1937. Storing up to 23 decimal digits, it was made to solve advanced mathematical physics problems that were present in his work. One of the participants in this project was Grace Hopper. The Harvard Mark 1 was used in many progras after its released, including the Manhattan Project. It was the world's first large scale calculator, and it precedes the ENIAC.
