Born on 12/9/1906 in New York City, former US Navy, Grace Hopper, set an example in the computing world as she was one of the members of the Harvard Mark 1 project. She promoted the idea of machine independent programming languages, helping to the develop other languages like COBOL, FLOW-MATIC, and BASE-MATIC. COBOL, an independent programming language, was another of her remarkable invention because it was the first language able to run on multiple manufacturer's computers, and it led to other compliers to be built like it.
